When is Peak Moving Season and How You Can Save

It is estimated that nearly 50 million Americans move each year. Out of that number, 80% of these relocations take place between April and September. These spring and summer months are referred to as the peak moving season. During this time period, especially June, July, and August, apartment moves will be in high demand.

Why is Summer the Peak Moving Season?

There are many reasons for this peak moving season, but here are the two most popular reasons:

Parents of school-aged children would often rather relocate their children when they’re off for the summer instead of interrupting their school year. Parents might also prefer to wait until any school activities or sports have finished so as to cause as little disruption to their child’s life as possible.

Another reason for choosing summertime to move over the winter months is the weather. It’s dangerous and inconvenient to try to move in the rain or snow. For this reason, most will try to opt for the months where the weather is more likely to be clear and dry.

How to Save Moving Costs

Moving during the peak season may cost you a bit more than moving during the off-season. However, there are still a number of steps you can take to save as much money as possible.

The first step you can take to save money is to plan your move around the middle of the month and the middle of the week. Demand for moving companies runs higher near the end and first of each month and on the weekends. Hiring moving labor during the lower demand days may save you some cash.

Be on the lookout for discounts and deals. Most moving companies offer coupons for discounts when you book in advance. Discounts are also usually available to veterans and seniors during the peak season. Just be mindful of your move and plan ahead, be organized, and schedule well in advance to shave off some of the cost.

It’s best to avoid planning your move on a holiday weekend. Many folks try to shoot for those 3-day weekends to take advantage of the extra day off work. However, since the demand is higher during holidays, you can expect moving service rates to reflect the increased demand.
